Having the proper tools is essential to be prepared for fixing any problem with your car. You can go to a local automotive store and purchase a standard maintenance kit. The problem with doing this is that you will be spending too much money for tools that you may never use. Also, by assembling your own maintenance kit you can be assured that the tools are specific for your car. The following is a list of tools that should be gathered together so that you will be prepared to fix any problem that is listed in this car care guide.

Changing oil - wrench (for oil plug), oil filter wrench, oil pan, rags, and new oil

Tire repair - bottle jack and lug wrench

Replace fuses - pliers and tester (optional)

Replace a headlight - wrenches/screwdrivers (to gain access) and a new bulb

Fixing a broken hose - high temperature silicone tape, water/antifreeze, and a screwdriver (to
undo clamp)

Jump starting a battery - jumper cables, wire brush, wrench, and good battery (in another car)

Plugging a tire - tire plugging kit, pliers, air compressor, and a jack

Installing tire chains - tire chains (proper size) and chain tighteners

Using a tow rope - tow strap, short connector strap, and shackle
